15th May
Swanage 2nds v Bere Regis - A Close Run Thing.

On a day where most other matches in Dorset were rained off except one and that was the other Swanage match involving our 3rds, Swanage 2nds faced Bere Regis 2nds at Days Park. Swans had played Bere in a warm up game 3 weeks ago and beaten them and this time Swans had a stronger team, so optimism was high for a positive outcome. With the weather looking ‘iffy Swans Captain and Vice Captain didn’t want to come off on the wrong side of a Duckworth Lewis calculation by batting 2nd as we had done when facing Poole two weeks earlier, so having won the toss Swans decided to bat.

The innings got off to a bad start with a mix up between the Swanage opening pair and David Alcock was run out with the score on 6. Tim Ives joined Freddie Long and steadied the ship but progress was very slow and after 11 overs the Swans score was just 14. When Tim fell in the 12th over Simon Goldsack (24) came to the wicket and shared a 60 run partnership with Freddie. Unfortunately, for the second time in as many matches Simon tried to press the accelerator too soon and gave the Bere Regis first change bowler the charge, only to nick the delivery straight through to the keeper. (Note to self ‘bat with more patience’!)
Thereafter Geoff Willcocks banged a couple of 4s but was LBW to late out-swinger. Harry was promoted up the order to get the scoreboard moving but found the damp pitch and slow bowling less easy to get away than normal. Freddie was rewarded for his diligent batting with his first league 50 and did a great job anchoring the innings. It was down to Nilan on his home league debut to biff a quick 27 and put some respectability into the Swanage score so the innings ended on 152 for 8.

The Bere Regis reply was soon in trouble with a mean feat of bowling by Lily Wood who bowled 5 overs for just 9 runs and from the other end where Harry Long tore in and dismissed both opening batsmen who both fell to fantastic catches by Sid Nash at first slip. Harry finished his first spell 6 overs, 3 maidens, 2 wickets for 8! Mike Wells replaced Harry at the top end and took a wicket from his second ball trapping the number 4 LBW. A couple of overs later he took another wicket to a fine catch by young Freddie at mid-on and Swanage were in with a realistic chance of a victory with Bere Regis reeling on 43 for 4 off 18 overs.
However, it was not to be. The Bere number 3 Dean Rogerson (66) and captain Garry King (32) batted very sensibly and despite some steady Swanage bowling and some good ground fielding by the whole Swanage team Bere cruised home with 3 overs to spare.

In reality Swanage were 25 to 30 runs short of where they should have been and didn’t really give the bowlers enough to defend. Having said that had the Rogerson / King partnership been broken it might have been a different story.

8th - 9th May
With the 2nds called off it left to the 1sts and 3rds to fly the flag on Saturday, with the 1st XI playing hosts to Portland and the 3rds to Parley. With two victories the Swans really got their league season underway.

Swanage batted first on a wicket which was only playable due to some incredible work by Groundsman - Ron Barker and the covers! Swans recovered from the loss of 2 early wickets with a solid half-century partnership between Jon Gregory and John Lewis. When Lewis fell for 29, Gregory was joined by 'skipper' Ben Hodder. Together, they constructed a match-winning partnership of 145 at a run-a-ball. Hodder was finally dismissed for 83 which included 12 boundaries to all-corners of Days Park. Gregory remained undefeated on 85 with 10 boundaries. This enabled Swans to post a competitive total 215-5 from their 40 overs.

In reply, the visitors were soon in trouble against some excellent 'swing' bowling by Ryan Stearn who took a brace of wickets. Although, the visitors kept-up with the run-rate, they continued to lose wickets at regular intervals with Steve Ramsay and Craig Wells also claiming a brace. Despite some 'big' hitting by the visitors lower order they were restricted to 195-9 with Charlie Dyke and Freddie Long both holding crucial, spectacular catches towards the end of the game.

1st - 2nd May
On Saturday, the 1stXI travelled to recently relegated Premier Division Stalbridge in their rain-affected season-opener.

The hosts batted first and got off to a 'flying-start' reaching 100 in quick-time, Swans' managed to 'stem' the flow of runs with Harry Long, Steve Ramsey and Ryan Stearn all claiming a wicket each, however, with wickets in-hand the hosts lower-order managed to 'wrestle' back the initiative and posted an impressive 221-5 from their 40 overs.

In reply, Swans got off to the worst possible start and were in deep trouble at 57-6 requiring a revised total of 210 from just 35 overs. However, the innings was rescued by an excellent century partnership between Steve Kent who made 29 and Craig Wells. Wells batted majestically finishing unbeaten on 103 at a run-a-ball his 'knock' included 12 boundaries. Despite this, Swans ended-up on 185-7.

Also, on Saturday, the 2ndXI played host to Poole. The visitors batted first and were soon in trouble at 32-4 with Charlie Dyke and Mike Nash both claiming a brace of wickets. Then, despite some good bowling by Swans' 'trio' of spinners Ron Barker - who took 3 wickets, Dave Morton and Sid Nash, the visitors reached a very respectable 199-8.

In response to their revised target of 170 from just 30 overs, Swans got off to a solid start, but, continually lost wickets at regular intervals with only Mike Nash who struck a brilliant half-century (53 not out) with 7 fours and Dyke making any impression on the visitors bowling attack. Swans were restricted to a total of just 123-7.

24th - 25th April
This week saw the first competitive games with the firsts playing host to Premier League side - Bere Regis in a pre-season friendly. The visitors batted first and got off to a great start with 3 of their top-6 all making half-centuries. The bowlers all worked tirelessly to stem the flow of runs and were rewarded when Harry Long claimed 3 wickets, he was ably supported by Ben Hodder and Craig Wells. Despite this, the visitors finished with an imposing total of 248-7.
In reply, Swanage got off to a solid start through Jon Lewis and Mike Nash. However, when this partnership was broken there was a flurry of wickets claimed by the 2 Bere Regis left-arm bowlers. The only further resistance came from Hodder as Swans' were shot-out for just 90.

The seconds travelled to Bere Regis. Swans got away to an impressive start through David Alcock (33) and Nilan Weeraddanana (31), then, despite a middle-order collapse the innings was rescued by a half-century partnership between Simon Goldsack (62) and Sid Nash. This enabled Swans' to post a competitive total of 209-8
In reply, the hosts were soon in trouble due to some excellent bowling by Nash, Weeraddanana and Tommy Battrick who all claimed a brace of wickets. The visitors never recovered from this and were finally dismissed for 140.

Sat 3rds & Sunday Results 2021

28th August

The Thirds took the chance to continue with their policy of giving youngsters a chance with 4 U13s featuring in the game. Batting first Pete Barker (26) relished an opportunity to open the batting and after the early loss of James he put together an excellent partnership of 48 with Sam Wells (19) who made his highest adult score so far. Sadly after they both fell the Swanage batting crumbled with only Dylan Church (17) making any other significant contribution with his best score of the season. At 100 all out it was going to be an uphill task from there.

The Winton openers batted sensibly against some good Swanage bowling from Jack Grace and Dylan before James and Andrew Hancock took up the attack. Seb Wright built on his excellent debut behind the stumps making some great stops. Sadly a couple of dropped catches in the field meant Swanage were unable to get the break through and Winton reached their target for the loss of no wickets. A defeat in their final game but more experience gained for the future for Swanage's newest adult team.

21st August

The 3rds travelled to Wimborne giving both U13s keeper Seb Wright his debut as well as Molly Pavey. Swanage won the toss and batted first but got off to a terrible start with the loss of Tim Ives for a Golden Duck off the second ball of the match. There were good starts for David Haines, Gary Marsh, Tommy Battrick and Sam Wells but no one could really get on top of the bowling. Swanage regularly lost wickets to end on 117 - only Jon Gregory with 34 making a substantial contribution alongside Jack Grace at the end.

Excellent bowling by Jack Grace and Dylan Church gave Swanage some hope - they both took 2 wickets - Dylan's second an excellent caught and bowled. They were well supported by Sam Wells and Jon Gregory whilst Molly was unlucky not to take a wicket in her first over. Wimborne got to their target with 4 wickets down to finish second in the league.

14th August

The 3rds entertained Lychett and after the early loss of James Harding, Gary Marsh (19) and Tim Ives (22) pulled the innings around. After they both departed in quick succession the batting struggled against some tight Lychett bowling. Alan Marks (27 not out) and David Alcock got Swanage up to a more respectable 144.Lychett got off to a flyer with wicketkeeper Woan hitting some big shots. Wickets tumbled at the other end as Pete Barker finally got the rewards of all his excellent bowling taking 4 wickets including Woan. Swanage couldn't find another break through and despite a late run out lost out by 5 wickets.

On Monday Swanage hosted Robincroft for the 49th time - Roger Wilcox playing in every match. Charlie was the pick of the Swanage bowlers. In a close fought match Robincroft won out despite the best efforts of Phil Eades (52) and Simon Goldsack (48) to chase down the winning score.

7th August

With the 2nds cancelled against Ashmore the 3rds travelled to promotion seeking Winton. The rain stayed away for most of the time and Winton amassed over 350 against an inexperienced Swanage bowling attack. U13s Sam Wells took 2 wickets bowling a full 8 overs whilst Dylan Church took 3 catches including the catch of the match on the boundary.

In reply Swanage made sure that Winton fielded for the full 40 with Matt Dunster leading the resistance with a Boycottesque 30. It was left to David Alcock and Dylan to see out the match with Swanage a distant second but heads held high as always.

31st July

The 3rds had a fantastic game over on the Nursery Ground against Poole. Batting first the 3rds posted their best score of the season based around a century stand by Chris (55) and Tim (75). Quick runs at the end by James (22no) and Andrew (24) saw the 3rds pass 200 ending on 214 - 6.

After a direct hit run out from Matt Dunster, Alan Marks (2 -19) kept it tight early on with good support from Sam and Jack (2-37). Mark Savage went wicketless despite an excellent spell before 3 wickets from James (3-40). Alan's return saw a further wicket with a brilliant stumping from George Taylor. With Andrew and Chris on at the end the game became increasingly tight with every ball leading finally to Poole needing 2 to win off the final ball. A scrambled bye left the scores level and honours even with Poole ending on 214 - 9.

17 and 18th July

The 3s travelled to Marnhull and got off to the perfect start when Pete Barker took a wicket with the first ball of the match. Despite Mike Gould's 3 wickets Marnhull scored an impressive 254 - 6 in their 40 overs.Swanage lost regular wickets with only Tim (32) and Gary (20) reaching double figures as they ended 103 all out.

Sunday saw the final instalment of Chaz v C with a time game. After an impressive 70 from Sam Willcocks Team Chaz ended on 190 with Chris Wood taking 4 wickets.Team C were never in the chase after losing early wickets but did manage to hold out for a draw with 9 down.

11th and 12th July

The 3rds were also at home and after losing early wickets the score was bolstered by back to back 50 partnerships between Tim Ives (57) and Lily Wood (20) and then Tim and Mark Savage (22). Sadly a flurry of late wickets after shot of the day form Gary Marsh meant Swanage didn't bat their overs and were all out for 160. Freya Cutler took 5 wickets for ParleyAfter early wickets from Lily and Mark and a great spell by Ross Swanage had a sight of victory before solid batting from Parley took the game away from them - Swanage losing by 6 wickets.

Finally Game 4 of C v Chaz inter club only got half way as Team C batted first. Andy Lyons scored a second 50 of the season and there were runs at last for Matt Dunster with an excellent 39 as Team C ended on 137 with 2 wickets each from Lily and Charlie. It now all comes to the finale next week with a time game that C needs to win to square the series.

26th and 27th June

The 3rdXI were involved in a thrilling-game at Winton. Swanage made a respectable 160-7 built around a 90-run partnership between Tommy Battrick and James Harding. Battrick completed his half-century (54) and Harding made a 'fluent' (29).

In response, the hosts got off to a great start, however, they were put under pressure in the middle-overs by Harding - who claimed 3 wickets, Alan Marks, Mark Savage and Lily Wood. Despite this, the hosts secured victory by just 2 wickets in an enthralling encounter.

19th and 20th June

The 3rdXI entertained Wimborne who won the toss and batted first. Despite being damp the pitch played well as did a series of Wimborne's young batters with Rhys Williams(67) and Alfie Ingram(96) both impressing as Wimborne reached 259 - 4. Only Ed Cross was able to keep the runs down with an impressive 8 over spell for just 27 runs whilst Jacob Pope took 2 wickets.

Lots of Swanage batters made good starts but the wickets fell at regular intervals and Swanage were well behind the run rate. It was however a memorable day for Ed Cross - who made his first half-century (66) for the club and some with some excellent support from Gary Marsh (17), Sam Marks (18) and finally Tom Wollen the 3rds posted their highest score of the season of 197 - 9 losing by 62 runs.

Sun

Sadly Sunday was a complete wash out with the U8s, Women's Team and Sunday XIs all having their matches cancelled.

12th and 13th June

Also on Saturday, the 3rdXI recorded their second victory with a convincing 8 wicket win at Lytchett. The hosts were soon under pressure due to some great bowling by both Pete Barker and Sam Marks - who claimed his first 5-wicket haul for the Club to help dismiss the hosts for just 156. In reply, Swans' cruised to their target for the loss of just 2 wickets with Tim Ives making a sublime, unbeaten (71) - which included 9 boundaries in a partnership of 125 with Harry Long who ended on a well made 46 not out.

On Sunday, Swanage hosted Cerne Valley in a 40-over match.

The visitors won the toss and, unsurprisingly, elected to bat on a blisteringly hot afternoon. The visitors were soon under pressure due to some fantastic bowling by both Pete Barker and Charlie Dyke. This was maintained with some really economical bowling by Jack Battrick, Andrew Hancock and Sam Willcocks - who all claimed a wicket. Sid Nash, also, bowled well taking a 'brace' of wickets, this helped restrict the visitors to 185-8.

In reply, Swanage were, also, soon under pressure losing 3 quick wickets, despite this, Tommy Battrick batted brilliantly making 37. However, wickets continued to fall at regular intervals, until the complexion of the game changed with an excellent half-century 7th wicket partnership between Mike & Sid Nash. Sid batted brilliantly making 32 - which included 2 'huge' sixes - when he departed Mike was joined by Pete Barker - who batted very sensibly making 15. When he departed, Nash was joined by Hancock and 16 were still needed to win. He defended very well, until fittingly, Nash hit the winning runs in the penultimate over with his 10th boundary to remain undefeated on 60.

A great weekend for the Swans with both the vets and the youngsters to the fore.

5th and 6th June

The 3rds batted first against a strong Winton team over on the Nursery Ground. Some strong Winton bowling kept Swanage under pressure throughout and only Chris Wood (24) and Andrew Hancock (11) made it to double figures. Three runouts didn't help the cause as Swanage were dismissed for 107.
Winton's openers showed how it should be done as they compiled an unbroken 111 partnership to win the game by 10 wickets. Pete Barker (8 overs for 14) was the pick of the bowlers whilst Andrew Hancock was brilliant once again in the field pulling off some remarkable stops.

With Sunday's match cancelled there was an opportunity for an inter club match. Stand out performances came from Sid Nash with the bat as he passed 50 for the first time for the adult teams. Battrick's, Tommy and Jack also had good games - Jack taking 3 wickets and nearly grabbling a fourth. Team C ran out winners as team Chaz never really got their innings going.

29th and 30th May

The 3rds came off second best against a strong Poole side. Fielding first Pete Barker kept things tight as well as getting an early wicket but some strong Poole hitting meant Swanage were always up against it. The wickets were shared around with Gary Marsh, James Harding Tommy Battrick all getting one and Sam Marks taking a wicket on his debut. Mike Gould bowled well taking a couple of wickets. With Poole finishing on 226 - 8 Swanage needed to bat well but sadly were not able to do so against some good Poole bowling and fielding. Only Tim Ives reached double figures with 20 as the 3rds were skittled out for 47 and an early return to Swanage.

On Sunday Swanage hosted a far too strong Wessex Pilgrims who racked up 274 - 2 in their 35 overs. With a full side plus some Surrey league players you have to wonder what was to gain for them against a Swanage side comprised mainly of youngsters!!!! Swanage batted well ending on 183 - 6 with Andy Lyons scoring 50 and Charlie Dyke just falling just short on 49.
Captain Pete Barker said it was one of the hardest Sunday games I've ever played in and went on to thank his team for their attitude and spirit in keeping going on such a hot day and against such a tough side. He also thanked the support of those watching adding he felt proud of all those players and supporters from Swanage who were there. Finally he added a heartfelt message - Up the Swans a club forever in my heart - neatly summing up the feelings we all know he has for the club.
50s Freddie Long and Andy Lyons.

22nd May
A very young, inexperienced 3rdXI side entertained a very experienced team from Bournemouth on the Nursery Ground. In a very similar scenario to the 1stXI, their match was reduced to 27 overs-a-side. Despite some good bowling by both Pete Barker and Lily Wood, ably assisted by George Taylors' wicket-keeping, the visitors amassed 173-3.

In reply, Swanage were soon under pressure against some excellent bowling and lost wickets at regular intervals. The innings was given some respectability by a brilliant innings of 38 from James Harding, despite this, Swanage were dismissed for just 74. There was still a number of positives to take from the game as there were debuts for Jack Battrick, Ed Cross, Joe Jolly, Sam Wells and Tom Wollen who will all improve for the experience.

16th May
Swanage 3rds v Marnhull - Not Such A Close Run Thing!!!
After their excellent performance against Parley last week the 3rds came up against Marnhull - who in the words of Brian Dobson from Winton are desperate to win the league!!!! They accordingly brought a team made up entirely of experienced players and not a youngster in sight. Despite that the 3rds got off to a stunning start with Pete Barker and Andrew Hancock taking early wickets. After a batting recovery Dave Morton came on and took a wicket in his first over. Sadly the first ball of his next over proved to be his final act in the game as when trying to stop a fierce drive back towards he only succeeded in fracturing his finger. Dave's departure left Swanage in subdued mood and a lengthy 5th wicket partnership saw Marnhull end on an impressive 275 - 4.
Swanage were never really in the hunt and losing regular wickets fell to 47 - 8. An excellent 9th wicket partnership by Brandon Mahadeo(35no) and Mike Gould(29), who had also both bowled well in the Marnhull innings, took the score to a more respectable 115 before Mike was out. With no Dave that was the end of the Swanage innings and the end of the match.
Like the 1sts, the Sunday side had their game rained off though as I write this at six thirty in beautiful sunshine it feels that at the moment the Weather Gods are against us at the moment.
Thanks to Simon Goldsack and Mike Nash for their reports and fingers crossed for the 5th week in a row in the Advertiser

8th - 9th May
Over on the Nursery Ground the 3rds entertained Parley - which had, also, been meticulously prepared by Junior Groundsman Sam Wells and his more senior partner - dad Craig, despite the recent inclement weather.

The visitors batted first and were soon 'on-the-back-foot' against some sensational 'seam' bowling by both Pete Barker (2-9) and Lily Wood (1-13) - who helped restrict the visitors to just 23-3 off the first 12 overs. The visitors never recovered from this, as James Harding and Gary Marsh continued to keep it tight. With the introduction of Andrew Hancock the wickets started to tumble. He had a great day in the field with 3 catches and 3 wickets and even got involved in a run after some great fielding by Lily. With George Taylor improving match by match behind the stumps Parley ended on 145 - 9 after their 30 overs.

In reply, Swans got off to a lightning start with a half-century partnership between Matt Dunster & Chris Wood. When Dunster fell, the momentum of the innings was kept-up when Tim Ives joined Wood. Ives fell for 21 and, then, Wood was joined by Tommy Battrick who remained undefeated on 22. Fittingly, however, Wood struck the winning runs with his 9th boundary as he closed on 64 not out to guide Swans to a comfortable 8 wicket victory.

1st - 2nd May
With no 3rds game this weekend the Nursery Ground saw its first match with a final pre season inter club. Team Dunster started well with captain Matt (24) and Andrew Hancock (42) putting on 80 for the first wicket against some good bowling by Pete Barker, Gary Marsh, James Harding and Tom Wollen. Their partnership was ended when Joe Jolly had Matt caught before Josh Titley (1-12) took his first senior wicket when he had Andrew LBW. Hard hitting Sam Willcocks scored a rapid 53 with 5 sixes and 5 fours before retiring. A flurry of late wickets including one on debut for Eden Crook left Team Dunster on 201 from their 35 overs.

Sadly that was that as within minutes of walking off the heavens opened and the only option for Junior Groundsman Sam Wells was to call the game off on what was now a rain sodden trac

24th - 25th April
3rds
The thirds travelled to Wareham for their first match to play a side a couple of divisions higher. An excellent innings by Ashley Hayes was the backbone of their innings of 228. It was skipper Lily Wood who returned the best figures with 1-16 in her 5 overs but she was well supported by Tom Wollen and Andrew Handcock after early wickets from Jacob Pope and Safia Nadaf.
Batting second Swanage were always behind the run rate with a patient 31 from David Haines, 24 from Tim Ives and 13 from Lily Wood being the main contributions to the total of 110 all out.

Sunday 25th April Inter Club
With so many people available the Swans were able to put 2 sides on Sunday for another inter-club match. This gave the opportunity to a few more junior players to get a taste of adult cricket as well as a few returnees to cricket after a few years out. Team Woody batted first but lost early wickets to a hostile spell by Andrew Hancock (2-10). Seb Lyons on his debut took a further wicket which left debutants James Harding and Sam Wells at the crease. After an early running mix up they batted well before James was out for 10 whilst Sam carried his bat through the rest of the innings for 24 not out. He was well supported by the hard-hitting Tommy (33) and Ed Cross (18) before batting with Dad Craig (13), who narrowly missed a weekend pair. With a total of 183 from their 35 overs it looked like it would be a tight game.

A good opening spell by Matt Dunster (3-33) put Team Chaz on the back foot after a good start from Tom Wells (21) and Steve Howard (17). Charlie with 21 got them back on track before wickets from Gary Marsh and James with his first ball in adult cricket. The main partnership of 64 between Harry with his first fifty – 52 not out and Sid (21) took Team Chaz near to victory before a flurry of wickets – Mike Gould taking 2 – 8, left Team Chaz down to the last pair. Cool heads of veteran Tim Ives (11) and U14 Jack Battrick (14) took them to victory with Jack hitting the winning runs.

Another good day's cricket and 5 teams over the weekend shows Swanage cricket is looking good.
