Saturday 2nd 2013

7th July – Sadly it was a poor performance by the side against Sturminster and Hinton at Day’s Park with both bat and ball. Batting first, Mike Salmon and Paul Norman got Swan’s off to good start and, at 90-1, it seemed another good score was on the cards but with their dismissal shortly after drinks, things started to unravel. Matt Beard offered some resistance with a classy 30 but the home side slumped to 167 all out. Mike Salmon’s new found bowling skills kept all in the field busy and two excellent dismissals were the only highlight of a very lack lustre fielding display.

29th June – In their much awaited top of the table clash with Sturminster Marshall the Saturday Second’s struggled to put any runs on the board after winning the toss. With all of the batsman failing against a wicket which offered much to the bowlers, Swanage could only muster 89 all out, in a disappointing batting performance. Taking to the field, David Haines rallied his troops with a rousing speech, the likes of which Churchill himself would have been proud. And so as bad as the batting had been, the bowling and fielding was inspired, and it was now the table topping Sturminster who found them selves in unfamiliar territory. With some excellent bowling from Elliot Baczala, Nick Pestana, Pete Barker and the wizardry of Dave Moreton, wickets tumbled. Catches, run-outs, stumpings, LBW’s, all sent batsmen back whence they came as the visitors were reduced to 80-7, but sadly, despite a great effort in the field, Swanage were unable to defend their meagre total.

22nd June – A real test for David Haine’s side at a damp and windy King’s Park vs Lytchett. Losing the toss, the home side fancied a bowl in the conditions, and it looked like a good decision with the Swanage top order struggling against a swinging ball and pacey attack. Paul Norman (52) and Elliot Baczala (31) stopped the bowlers having it all their way in dogged 4th wicket stand but the advantage slipped back to Lytchett after drinks, as Swanage found themselves 127/6. Despite this, some determined play from Liam Blake (33no) Joel Lowe and Pete Barker gave the team a healthy 185/8 total after their 45 overs. The home side got off to a good start and once again it seemed the game may be slipping away but some excellent work from Elliot Baczala (5/27) and Nick Pestana together with some tight overs from Pete Barker kept the hopes alive. It was a teasing delivery from debutant bowler Paul Yerby who made the much needed breakthrough, dismissing the in-form Lytchett opener as the advantage once again, switched sides. The strong bowling proved too much and it was Swanage who took the spoils in an excellent contest as the game finished in near darkness; Lytchett all out for 160.

15th June – Blandford only managed 20ao, Tillers and C get the runs.

8th June – The Saturday 2nd’s found the going tough, away to Corfe Mullen on an artificial wicket in their Division 5 match. Fielding first, Swanage toiled hard in the heat with little in the wicket for the bowlers. Dave Morton once again confused the opposition forcing 3 catches and a stumping, helped by an equally mysterious Andy Tillman (3 wickets) and a pacey Elliot Baczala (2 wickets). Nick Pestana and Pete Barker also bowled well and ,coupled with some fine catches by Joel Lowe and some good all-round fielding, Swanage contained the home side to 213/9. After the break Corfe Mullen took two very early wickets and things began to look worrying at 40/2 before Elliot Baczala 93no and Paul Norman 37 shared a 100 run 3rd wicket partnership restoring some of the balance. Runs and wickets continued to mount up and it wasn’t until Joel Lowe’s hard hitting 20 towards the end of the innings that Swanage could finally see the finish line. A good test for the side who got the points in the 43rd over and see’s them in touch at the top of their league.

The Saturday 2nd’s continued their successful run with an easy win over Witchampton, Dan Salmon’s maiden century (106no) being the highlight of the day. Elliot Baczala (3 wickets) once again did most of the damage with the ball as the visitors were dismissed for 157.

11/5/13 At home to Wimborne and Colehill IVs Swanage chose to bat. A good start was consolidated by a stand of 115 between Paul Norman and Liam Blake, Paul went on to finish on 100 not out. A fine performance on a wicket offering encouragement to the variety of bowling delivered. He was well supported by a quick-fire unbeaten 25 from Elliott Baczala. 219 proved to be an excellent total when Elliott bowling with pace and accuracy took 4 early wickets. Dave Morton then cleaned up with 4-15. Another maximum for Swanage!

4/5/13 Swanage travelled to Sturminster for the season’s opening game. Having lost the toss Swans bowled first and once Pete Barker broke the opening stand of 43 he ripped their middle order out taking 5 for 33. Dave Morton bowled tidily taking 2 as did Andy Tillman. Needing only 91 to win Mike Hernandez blazed to 50 well supported by Paul Norman’s 22. A 9 wicket win and maximum points secured.
